Blog no. 8: Before the Dawn of Television
So much changed upon the the advent of television in one home. In Linda Ellerbee's family, when they knew no TV yet, they would eat together and have conversations at the dinner table. At night, before going to bed, she could hear her parents talking in the bedroom, and their voices, however unclear were like lullabies that would hum her to sleep. Sometimes mom and dad would stay up to play cards. More than that, daddy used to read a lot and mom even had her own library card. She belonged to the Book-of-the-Month Club and also subscribed to magazines. Mom and dad each had their one-on-one dates with their only daughter. Mom would take her to the movies or she and dad would go together. Dad and Linda would play baseball and go to the games. Holidays used to be the best. There were loads of food and playtime, not only with cousins, but with the grown-ups as well. Hide-and-seek, baseball, dodge ball, and football were so much fun, until television took center-stage and replaced them all.
